Vic: Beleaguered RMIT appoints new chancellor
Melbourne's beleaguered RMIT University has appointed a new chancellor.
PROFESSOR DENNIS GIBSON -- currently the vice-chancellor of Queensland University ofTechnology -- was appointed at a special meeting of the university's council last night, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of DON MERCER earlier this month.
Mr MERCER -- a former chief executive of the ANZ Bank -- quit on February 3 amid allegationsof an internal power struggle with vice-chancellor RUTH DUNKIN over the university's financialproblems.
Five university council members followed his lead, resigning earlier this week.
Acting chancellor PETER THOMAS says Professor GIBSON -- who has a background in mathematicsand has been vice-chancellor at QUT since 1989 -- would be formally elected at the nextcouncil meeting on March 3.
