CHEYENNE

Laramie County Fire District 2 to hold open house this Saturday

In conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week, Laramie CountyFire District 2 will sponsor an open house at the 5800 North CollegeDrive station Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be displays and information booths from such agenciesas the Wyoming State Department of Fire Prevention and ElectricalSafety, Cheyenne Regional Medical Center, American Medical Responseand the Laramie County Citizens Emergency Response Team.

The fire district also will have displays of the various fire andrescue equipment, as well as fire prevention and home safetyliterature and information. Residents will have the opportunity torequest smoke detector installations, order reflective address signsand schedule home assessment visits.

Fires Brigade convoy security travels 1 million miles, noinjuries

The Security Force and Convoy Security components of the 115thFires Brigade from Cheyenne reached a major milestone Sept. 18 bytraveling more than one million miles throughout Kuwait and Iraqduring the deployment without any serious injuries.

"One million mission miles in less than 60 days on mission, whilemaintaining an equipment readiness rate throughout the brigade inexcess of 90 percent, is a huge success," Sgt. Maj. William N.Frost, operations NCOIC, Headquarters, Headquarters Battery 115thFiB said in a news release. "The vast majority of these miles aredriven at night while escorting large convoys that (in the past)have experienced accidents, medical emergencies and the occasionalImprovised Explosive Device."

The soldiers attribute their safety record to constant trainingand avoiding complacency.

The 1-151 FA from the Minnesota National Guard, the 2-300 FA fromWyoming National Guard, and A Company, 960 Brigade Support Battalionfrom the Wyoming National Guard are the units conducting convoysecurity.

Wyoming National Guard recognizes support from officials

Four of Wyoming's leaders and one Cheyenne businessman werehonored Saturday night during the annual Wyoming National GuardGovernor's Reception.

Maj. Gen. Ed Wright, Wyoming's adjutant general, presented StateAuditor Rita Meyer with the National Guard Association of the UnitedStates Patrick Henry Award for her continued efforts to champion theWyoming National Guard's programs.

State Sen. Wayne Johnson, R-Cheyenne, and Dale Steenbergen,president of the Greater Cheyenne Chamber of Commerce, received theWyoming National Guard Association Medal of Excellence. Johnson wasrecognized for his leadership in increasing funds available toassist families of deployed military members. Steenbergen wasrecognized for helping to champion increased funding for militaryprograms in Cheyenne.

State Sen. Michael Von Flatern, R-Gillette, and state Rep. LoriMillin, D-Cheyenne, were presented with the Commander's OutstandingCivilian Service Award for their exceptional support for the WyomingNational Guard, as well as for being exemplary public servants tothe people of Wyoming.

Wyoming adjutant general to update communities

The adjutant general of the Wyoming National Guard will travel tocommunities across the state over the next several weeks.

Maj. Gen. Ed Wright will be updating local residents ondeployments as well as current and future organizational operations.

Wright plans to conclude each meeting by introducing a liveInternet-based conversation with deployed commanders and locally-based soldiers. Meetings will be held in Gillette on Oct. 13,Sheridan on Oct. 14, Casper on Oct. 15, Cody on Oct. 19, and Landeron Oct. 20.
