Shopping centres in Australia are continuing to attract customers. A few years ago, online retailing held interest, but has not been able to keep up the tempo. The figures justify the popularity of the "bricks and mortar" centres. Shopping centres have recorded business worth $A160 billion in 2003. On the other hand, online sales are expected to generate just $A3.2 billion. The Australian Retailers Association's IT and e-commerce director, Chad Gates, says online sales in the lead-up to Christmas are likely to account for $A600 million. The performance of Internet retailers has been lacklustre.
